finally getting off of reddit

november 12, 2021

Fuck it I'm done with reddit once and for all. Since 2014 and before they've made a steady stream of decisions and changes that I ethically and ideologically disagree with. I've been dissatisfied with the general reddit community in general as well, anyone remember "we did it reddit!"? They are stationing themselves to somehow be even worse than the other major social media sites, and at the very least it's filled with even more spam somehow.

I'm off twitter other than a few people I follow via my BirdsiteLIVE instance, and I've never even been on any of the other cancerous social media sites. Even for reddit all I've done lately is look at cute animal pictures and follow a few communities. I've either found alternatives or I'll just live without them.

My animal a day posts will continue being available on reddit as well as on all the other places. However, the reddit part of posting will be totally unmonitored from now on, it will probably post for a while but if they fuck the API or it hits the spam filter for the sixth time then too bad, so sad; I'm not fixing it.

There's plenty of alternative options to view the animal a day posts:

Cheetah a Day on my website and Gemini capsule

Cheetah a Day on the Fediverse

Cheetah a Day RSS feed

Snow Leopard a Day on my website and Gemini capsule

Snow Leopard a day on the Fediverse

Snow Leopard a Day RSS feed

I'm not hopeful for the reddit API considering how all the other walled gardens have started treating their APIs:

Third-party twitter apps strangled by the twitter API

discord's horrible shit for API developers

I was going to write a massive rant but I can't even be bothered to give reddit that much effort any more, here's a link dump.

TechCrunch September 30, 2014 — Reddit Plans Its Own Cryptocurrency To Give Back To Its Users After $50 Million Raise

When reddit went closed source, you could tell exactly what they were going to start doing.

reddit introduces native video ads

reddit's shitty UI on mobile and when logged out manages to rival that of twitter somehow.

Bullshit cryptocurrency decentralized "better internet" claims

Archive of tweet since it was deleted

I've got bad news for reddit, decentralized forums have existed since before the internet even existed! It's existed since before the crypto assholes were even born!

Oh yeah and decentralized social networking is still alive and well today (and Usenet still exists too, it's just small)

Here's a list of FREE AND OPEN SOURCE decentralized social networking software

The web of Fediverse software. Note that there isn't one company with investors that controls the single proprietary implementation like reddit's vision.
